World Cup, Round of 16 updates 6/9/14

The Round of 16 at the FIBA World Cup 2014 has begun as we now move to the straight knockout phases. USA vs Mexico; France vs Croatia; Dominican Republic vs Slovenia and Spain vs Senegal are the showcase games of today.

Madrid

France 69-64 Croatia

France edged Croatia 69-64 in the first game of the second round in Madrid despite letting slip a third quarter, double digit lead.

A three from Bojan Bogdanovic with a minute remaining narrowed Les Bleus’ lead to 66-64, but the European champions showed enough determination to ice the game from the line.

Nicolas Batum led the winners with 14 points, denying Bogdanovic’s moment, as he had a game-high 27 points.

Spain 89-56 Senegal

It took until the latter stages of the second quarter onwards, but Spain eased their way to the last eight with a 89-56 win over a hard-working Senegal, who bow out with their heads held high.

Pau Gasol once again led the Spanish frontline with 17 points but the hosts struggled to distance themselves from Senegal, who matched them blow-for-blow for the first 27 minutes.

Mouhammad Faye led Senegal with 12 points.

Barcelona

USA 86-63 Mexico

USA breezed past neighbours Mexico 86-63 in the first game of the Round of 16 in Barcelona.

Stephen Curry led the U.S. with 20 points, which included six three-pointers as the world champions advanced to the quarter-finals. Gastavo Ayon had a game-high 25 for the Mexicans who bow out.

Dominican Republic 61-71 Slovenia

Slovenia advanced to the quarter-finals with a 71-61 win over the Dominican Republic to bring the first day in Barcelona to a close.

Zoran Dragic led Slovenia with 18 points as they built a 10-point lead at half-time and never looked like being trouble, even when the Dominicans tried to threaten in the latter stages.
