Galatasaray inks Greek National player Vougioukas

Galatasaray Liv Hospital Istanbul made another addition to its frontline, adding a former Euroleague champion Ian Vougioukas on a one-year deal, club announced on Friday morning. Vougioukas (2.11 meters, 29 years old) spent the last two seasons with Unics Kazan, which he helped to reach the Eurocup Finals this spring as he averaged 11 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 23 games during the campaign. Previously, he had a two-year stint with Panathinaikos, helping them win the 2011 Turkish Airlines Euroleague title as well as a Greek League and a Greek Cup crown. Vougioukas participated in the Euroleague Final Four in each of his three seasons in the competition – in 2009 with Olympiacos, 2011 and 2012 with Panathinaikos.

In his last Euroleague season, he averaged 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in just 12 minutes per game, which prorated over 40 minutes ranked him third-best in scoring (23.8 ppg) and fourth in performance index rating (26.8 per game) in the competition. Vougioukas, who is currently playing for Greece at the 2014 FIBA World Cup, represented the Greek national team at the 2010 FIBA World Championships, and won a silver medal at the 2005 World Under-20 Championships, too. He also played for Panellinios, helping the club make the 2010 Eurocup Finals, and Ago Rethymno in his native Greece, after a stint playing college basketball at Saint Louis University.
