The NBA is reportedly looking at Martin Luther King Day as the opening date for the 2020/21 season after managing to crown a champion this year.

According to Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports, the league is “focusing on Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 18) for a start date next season,” although a decision on a full 82-game schedule hasn’t been made. Goodwill has reported that the main concern for the league is returning to a normal calendar that would see the 2021/22 season begin in October as NBA campaigns normally would.

He wrote:

“The focus for next season, primarily, is getting things finished in a reasonable amount of time for the draft, free agency and rest in the summer of 2021 for a traditional mid-October start.

“A Christmas Day start is still in play, approximately a three-and-a-half week gap between the two dates, and while some around the league are optimistic a start can occur closer to the Christmas holiday, it feels more pragmatic to foresee a start around Jan. 18, 2021. The league will give teams a two-month notice before the start of the season.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver appreciates that players will need a physical and mental break given the unusual circumstances that saw the league take its show to an isolated location in Orlando. As it pertains to fans returning to arenas, Silver hasn’t been able to say much, but that is the goal. The state of the U.S, though, will dictate how things go on that front.
