Sergio Scariolo opened up about the decision of Marc Gasol to join the Toronto Raptors in the middle of the 2018/19 season.

The Italia coach said he liked Gasol’s ‘winning culture and unselfish mentality’.

“I had a strong, friendly relationship with Marc. I felt he would be a great addition to our team if he ended up coming. I had to be objective, though, because my bosses were asking my opinion, the pros and cons etc.

I liked the winning culture, the playmaking, the defense, the versatility, the unselfish attitude (he brought to the team). Marc had to adjust to a different role (compared to his time with the Memphis Grizzlies).

He had to come off the bench, collaborate with Serge Ibaka, but it worked well,” Scariolo, who is working as an assistant of Raptors’ head coach Nick Nurse, said during his appearance in the ”World of Basketball” podcast with Fran Fraschilla on SiriusXM

Gasol and Scariolo earned the 2019 NBA championship with Toronto. This season, they lost to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
