Tyronn Lue is finalizing a five-year deal to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Lue, 43, was the Clippers’ lead assistant on Doc Rivers’ staff this season.

Chauncey Billups will now join Lue as the Clippers’ lead assistant, according to Shams Charania.

On Lue’s staff, Billups will be joined by former Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Larry Drew, Charania notes.

Drew was also an assistant on Lue’s staff with the Cavaliers before he was promoted to head coach following Lue’s dismissal in 2018.

Lue previously coached the Cavaliers to three straight appearances in the NBA Finals, including the franchise’s only championship in 2016.

As a head coach, Lue has a record of 128-83.

Lue had “significant support among key Clippers players in the search process,” according to Wojnarowski.

Clippers players are reportedly “happy” that Lue was named head coach of the team, reports Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times.

Lue will now have the opportunity to lead a team with championship aspirations, just like when he did when he took over the Cavaliers.

Now that Lue is off the coaching market, Jeff Van Gundy becomes the frontrunner for the Houston Rockets’ job, while his brother Stan is the frontrunner to take over the New Orleans Pelicans.
