Brett Brown is not going to lead the Australian national team in the rescheduled Tokyo Olympic Games, it was announced today.

The former Sixers’ head coach released a statement explaining the reason behind his decision:

“Whilst I have a deep and long-standing passion for Australian Basketball, I am currently unable to commit to coaching the Boomers at next year’s Olympic Games.

The uncertainties around the direction of my professional future unfortunately mean that I cannot commit to the time and preparation that this job deserves and requires.

The difficulties around traveling internationally with my family during the pandemic have also contributed to my decision.”

The Tokyo Olympics are currently slated to take place from July 23 to August 8. Brown was appointed to the role of the Australian national team head coach for Tokyo Olympics on 26 November 2019, with the Games originally set to take place from 24 July – 9 August 2020.

The veteran coach is coming off a disappointing season with the Philadelphia 76ers. As a result, the seven-year partnership with the NBA franchise came to an end in August.
