After the NBA was able to finish its historic, unprecedented season, commissioner Adam Silver understands that he isn’t the only one that deserves credit.
In recognition of efforts during the historic season, Silver informed league employees in a “Thank You” letter that they are all receiving a $1,000 bonus and four weekends off beginning Oct. 30, as well as Thanksgiving week, according to Shams Charania.
Silver’s plan for a bubble at Disney World in Orlando, Florida was executed thanks to the cooperation from many people in and around the league.
Including Game 6 of the NBA Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat, the NBA played 172 games over three months and had zero positive coronavirus tests.
It was a truly remarkable feat that showed that a bubble environment works.
The 2019-2020 NBA season was the longest season ever, as it finished almost a year after it began in October 2019, due to the four-plus month hiatus as a result from the coronavirus pandemic, followed by the NBA restart which lasted three-plus months.
The NBA and NBPA will have to renegotiate aspects of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and negotiate new salary cap and luxury tax figures for what will be an unusual upcoming offseason.
Key dates and deadlines for the offseason still remain up in the air such as when free agency begins.
In a normal year, a team can begin making trades when their season is over and all 30 teams can make deals after the NBA Finals.
However, a transaction moratorium is still in place, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks and the NBA and NBPA will be responsible for determining when that temporary pause will end.
The start date of the 2020-2021 NBA season still remains unknown, but both Silver and NBPA executive director Michele Roberts previously stated it won’t begin until next year.
