New Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan is overhauling the team’s coaching staff, as he has let go of multiple assistant coaches.
Roy Rogers, Dean Cooper, Nate Loenser and Karen Stack Umlauf won’t be returning to the team after being on Jim Boylen’s staff this past season, as announced by the team.
Rogers had only finished the first year on his three-year deal, while the Bulls just picked up an option for the 2020-2021 season on Loenser’s contract.
Stack Umlauf has been with the organization for 35 years and was the first female coach in franchise history.
She was one of the first hires under former Bulls general manager Jerry Krause, notes K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago.
“I appreciate the time I was able to spend with Dean, Nate, Roy and Karen,” Donovan said in a statement. “I really want to thank all of them for their service and commitment to the Chicago Bulls. This is the tough side to our business, and I wish all of them the best moving forward.”
Ownership continues to give the green light to the new regime to make changes, no matter the cost, according to Johnson.
“I would like to thank Dean, Nate, Roy and Karen for their contributions and dedication to our organization,” executive vice president Arturas Karnisovas said in a statement. “Decisions like these are never easy, and I wish them well in the future.”
The Bulls plan to focus on player development with a young core of players, so Donovan and Karnisovas will look to hire new assistants with that in mind.
