Daily Gossip, Saturday 16/8/14

After a mini break, the daily gossip returns with people throwing ice water over themselves. It’s a craze, and as it’s for a good cause, it’s a fad that actually is meaningful (selfies are not).

COMMISSIONER SILVER ACCEPTS THE ICE WATER CHALLENGE

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver accepted the ice water bucket challenge laid out by the USA national team and the Miami Heat front office.

Silver then challenged Dikembe Mutombo and Becky Hammon to go next.

The ALS ice bucket challenge is to raise awareness for ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which attacks your spinal cord and can lead to speech difficulties and even paralysis.

GEORGE: I WANT TO BE ON 2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM

Indiana Pacers’ Paul George wants to play in the Rio Olympics in 2016. He was supposed to represent the USA in Spain at the upcoming World Cup until his dream was crushed by a horrifying leg injury at the intersquad scrimmage.

George has also hit out at critics, most notably ESPN and Dallas Mavericks owner Marc Cuban that have said that NBA players should not compete in international basketball. While it’s a fair point, owners and journalists don’t know what it’s like as a player to represent your country.

“I think it’s really unfair to get the criticism they’re getting,” George said. “It was a freak accident. No one has been injured the whole time since USA Basketball has been here (as far as) a huge injury. I just think it happened. Freak accidents happen; they don’t deserve any criticism for this. I would still like to be a part of USA Basketball in 2016. At the end of the day it’s all about representing our country and bringing home the Gold.”

When asked about the Olympics and if George wanted to play in Brazil. It was a definite yes.

“Absolutely,” he said. “It’s in Brazil (laughing). No, I look forward to the comeback. I look forward to the opportunity to participate with Team USA in 2016. This injury has nothing to do with my take on playing for my country at all.”

SUTON SIGNS WITH BADALONA

With the weekend a relatively quiet one in Europe, few major signing to talk about, but one of interest is that Goran Suton has moved to Joventut Badalona from Cedevita Zagreb.

Suton averaged 9 points and 4 rebounds last season in the Eurocup and has signed a 1-year deal with the Catalan side.

SWITZERLAND LOSE BRUNNER

Switzerland were dealt a major blow to their hopes of qualification for Eurobasket 2015 when it was announced that Greg Brunner looks likely to miss the entire qualifying campaign with a shoulder injury.

Brunner was a key factor in their win over Russia and the Swiss play Italy next.
