NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has given yet another update on the potential start of the 2020/21 season, saying his “best guess” is the campaign won’t begin until January 2021.

The 2019/20 season is still ongoing, with four teams vying for the title. And there could be a lengthy layoff after a champion is crowned.

The league is yet to set an official start date for next season and, speaking during a CNN special with Bob Costas, Silver suggested January would be the most optimal period to begin the new term, one he hopes will be played in home arenas and in front of fans.

“The more I’m learning, I continue to believe we’ll be better getting into January,” he said (H/T Mirjam Swanson of the Southern California News Group). “The goal for us next season is to play a standard season, 82-game season and playoffs. In home arenas, in front of fans.”

Prior to his appearance on CNN, the Commissioner told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols December seemed a bit early.

“Our number one goal is to get fans back in our arenas,” he continued. “My sense is, in working with the Players Association, if we could push back even a little longer and increase the likelihood of having fans in arenas, that’s what we would be targeting.”
