The Memphis Grizzlies are hiring Phoenix Suns’ assistant coach Darko Rajakovic to the same role, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Rajakovic replaces Nevan Spahija who recently left the Grizzlies for a coaching job overseas.

Rajakovic, an assistant with the Serbian national team, most recently at the 2019 FIBA World Cup, built a strong reputation working with young players with the Oklahoma City Thunder (2012-2019) and Suns (2019-2020).

It’s an ideal fit for him, as the Grizzlies have a solid young core of players that features Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Dillon Brooks and Brandon Clarke.

“I’m very excited to join Taylor’s staff and the Grizzlies organization,” Rajakovic said. “This is a unique opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the growth of a highly competitive and sustainable program in Memphis. I would also like to thank Monty [Williams] and the Suns organization and wish them all the best.”

The Grizzlies also recently hired former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) women’s basketball coach, Sonia Raman, as another assistant coach.
