First day review of U17 World Cup in Dubai

Interesting first day in Dubai with lots of great baskets and some young names to remember.

Group A

USA Team and Greece displayed a great show at the end of the day. It looked very similar to those matches between senior national teams. At times, it looked like Greece could surprise the powerful American side, but in the end the score was 83-73 for the perennial U17 World Cup champion. Diamond Stone scored 22 point and Papagiannis chipped in 16 in the loss.

Angola had to work really to defeat 82-72 an undersized Philippines NT which was pure heart the whole game. Poor shooting percentage by the losing side and great job by Joao Jungo with 26 points and 11 rebounds were the keys of the game.

Group B

Puerto Rico surprised Spain 67-65 in a thriller thanks to a 2+1 by Texeira with just a couple of seconds to go. Lopez-Arostegui missed a late three-pointer for the u16 European champions.

Italy destroyed UAE, the host team, by an 89-point margin, 121-32. Nothing else to comment. The European team had a tremendous physical superiority over the local team, which could do nothing but trying to score a couple of shoots.

Group C

Australia defeated Japan 97-84 in the overtime. The Aussies almost lost a 17-points advantage. Vasiljevic collected 23 points and 11 rebounds to pace the winners. Rui Hachimura, who tied the game with a long-range shoot, got 22 and 9 for Japan.

France beat Canada 76-66 with 28 points and 20 rebounds from Gombaud, in a game which was decided in the last quarter.

Group D

Nikola Rakicevic led Serbia with 17 points to topple China 80-68. Fu Hao 19 points and 8 rebound in the losing effort.

Argentina erased Egypt, winning 74-39. Maximo Fjellerup collected 22 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists.
