In a move that was expected to come after a disappointing postseason, the Philadelphia 76ers have fired head coach Brett Brown.
“Brown’s dismissal is expected to be a precursor for more upheaval with the 76ers, whose senior leadership, including general manager Elton Brand, will begin exploring changes in the front office structure,” Adrian Wojnarowski also notes.
The franchise’s plan is for Brand to continue to oversee basketball operations.
Personnel and front office structure is reportedly undergoing “significant” evaluation and more changes are likely coming soon.
Some potential candidates for the open position includes 76ers assistant coach Ime Udoka, Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Tyronn Lue and Villanova head coach Jay Wright.
Brown was hired in 2013 and was well-respected within the organization.
He coached the team through the tough seasons of “The Process,” posting a record of 75-253 over the four seasons after he was hired.
During Brown’s last three seasons, the 76ers went 146-91 with their stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, but the full potential of the two players was never unlocked, which helped lead to Brown’s dismissal.
There’s reportedly a “strong desire” to keep Embiid and Simmons together and the next coach will have the chance to maximize their full potential before the organization considers trading players.
“We’re going to be doing a real assessment of how we got here and expect that more changes will need to be made in order to get this organization back on track. This will be a crucial offseason for us and we need to get it right,” 76ers managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement.
