Euroleague Basketball Board brought changes PDF Print E-mail
2008-06-27 16:32
Euroleague BasketballYesterday the Euroleague Basketball Board met at Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona in order to decide and announce the new changes that will be set from the upcoming season. These changes have to do with the format of the competition, the new rules that were announced by FIBA and some changes that are considered to be set during the next years.

First and most important, the format of the Euroleague stages is changed. There are going to be 4 groups of 6 teams each, and the first best-4 of every group will continue to the top-16 stage. The structure then will be the same, 4 groups of 4 teams where the best 2 continue to the quarter-finals. This was decided in order the teams play fewer games during the regular season of the competition.

Another fact that must be noticed, is that the Board is considering of some changes in order to up-level the standards of the competition, like demanding by the teams the capacity of their courts to be more than 10,000 in order to have long-term contracts with Uleb.

The official news from the Board is here .

Also, the 24 teams that are going to participate to the next year's Euroleague stages were announced and are:

Cibona (Croatia)

Le Mans, Nanci (France)

Alba Berlin (Germany)

Panathinaikos, Olympiakos, Panionios (Greece)

Maccabi Elite (Israel)

Air Avellino, Montepaschi Siena, AJ Milano, Lottomatica Roma (Italy)

Prokom Trefl (Poland)

Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania)

CSKA Moscow (Russia)

Partizan (Serbia)

Union Olimpija (Slovenia)

AXA Barcelona, TAU Ceramica, Unicaja Malaga, DKV Joventut, Real Madrid (Spain)

Efes Pilsen, Fenerbahce Ulker (Turkey)

4 Italien teams, 5 spanish teams and only 1 russian team. Is this an european competiton or a south european competition. I mean, in russia their are teams like Dinamo and Kymki who could easely play euroleague. In other contries it is not possible to play euroleague or they most win uleb cup (wath are the chances)

i completely agree. 2 spots less for italia and 2 more for russia and 1 spot less for france and 1 more for lithuania, that would be fair.
but you know, it's bartholomeo factor.

I totally agree that Italy shouldn't have 4 teams in the competition. Russia should have at least one more representative, 'cause Khimki has the standards to come to terms with the difficulties.

Maybe an expansion to the number of the teams, or even a qualification round before the groups of the regular season could be a reasonable solution to this problem.. like Uleb for example..

I'm from Spain, and I'm very surprised of how russian league can only have CSKA in this competition, with teams like Unics, Dynamo or Khimki playing in Uleb Cup... And France, whose teams only won 1 game per season, having two spots... or Italy, with two teams (at least) always out of Top 16...
