European Basketball Rookie Rankings #1

ImageHere’s the new European basketball rookie ranking, which I will update about four or five times each season. Strictly speaking, this isn’t a rookie ranking, instead every player born 1988 or later is qualified to appear on this list.

New feature: Floor time statistics (and more) for Euroleague players

ImageHello readers, I’m currently updating [it will take a few days] Euroleague player profiles, adding advanced statistics to the pages. These statistics examine play-by-play data, not just the usual boxscore data. In case you are not used to these stats, read my short guide later in this post.

Tempers fly high in Piraeus, Efes Maric-ed

ImageA quite hot Euroleague week is coming to an end, highlighted by yet another outstanding performance by Partizan’s Aleksandar Maric. Maric had 34 points and 16 rebounds and is now averaging 18.1 points and 9.9 rebounds a game, better than a certain Nikola Pekovic two seasons back.

Stat of the week: Comparing leagues again, this time three point shooting

ImageWhenever I watch an ACB game, I am under the impression that players are allowed to let it fly quicker and more frequently from the perimeter than in other European leagues. There are a whole lot of three point specialists that have made a name for themselves in the league over the years.

Weekend game

ImageKey game: Olympiacos beat Panathinaikos 87:76 behind Theodoros Papaloukas‘ outstanding performance. Barcelona and Real  Madrid remain at 9:1 and 10:0 respectively in ACB.

German BBL playoff game manipulated?

ImageAccording to the website of weekly German news magazine “Der Spiegel” [translated: "The Mirror", one of the most respected news magazines in Europe], the investigations by German authorities regarding the international betting scandal not only concentrate on football, but also on a Tennis women double game in Morocco, and on a German BBL Playoff game from June 2009.

Stat of the week: Top Euroleague rebounders

ImageThis week’s feature statistic: Rebounding percentage. Rebounding percentage, a common tool in the United States to determine a player’s production on the boards, is a minute- and pace-adjusted estimate of offensive, defensive and total rebounding.

Weekend Roundup 09-11-2009: Efes victorious in clash of the Turkish titans

ImageSpain: Real Madrid kept its ACB win streak alive, improving to 6 and 0 behind a combined 28 points by the power forward tandem of Jorge Garbajosa and Novica Velickovic. A semi-fit Juan Carlos Navarro had 10 points for Barcelona in crunch time to put aside a tough CajaSol side, as Navarro’s outstanding importance for Barca shows best in his absence.

Euroleague Week #3 Notes

ImageCSKA: Evgeny Pashutin’s team is 1:2 now, and they could easily stand at 0:3 had it not been for Victor Khryapa’s difficult buzzer beater in Athens. I don’t believe this is about neither the hole on the 4/5, nor about the stars’ alleged decline.

Weekend Roundup 02-11-2009: Unicaja loses fifth in a row

ImageAnother weekend of basketball in Europe’s domestic leagues is highlighted by the fifth loss of Unicaja Malaga in ACB, yet another win for Montepaschi on top of Lega A, this time in Milan, a narrow Barcelona victory at Estudiantes, and Caja Laboral’s first loss of the ACB season, in Valencia.

Euroleague Week #2 Notes

ImageAnother busy Euroleague week with twelve matches. Six of those were won by eighteen points or more. Rytas had a huge win in Orléans that has them now on top of their group at 2:0, while a big Final Four cadidate tumbled in Andalusia, and another European giant lost at home.
