Quote

10 Russian renegade clubs have decided to leave Russian Men's Superleague A and instead create their own private league, which with the combination of the VTB league practically means the end of Russian domestic league as we had known them. Read the entire announcement regarding the creation of this new league.

We, the undersigned representatives of Men’s Superleague A clubs, due to the events of last month which set the Russian basketball in turmoil, decided to walk out of the Basketball Superleague Board. In this situation, we consider it impossible to participate in the competition, organised and managed by the managers who have lost our trust.

The leading clubs of the country are going to establish a new, professional and independent, basketball league for the best Russian teams. We are convinced that only the independent status of the tournament which will be run by authorities, established by clubs, ensures a high level of competition, fair play and improves the quality of Russian basketball. We have created a working group of representatives of all the founding clubs; the working group is entrusted to develop regulatory and legal documents needed to create and conduct the competitions.

We are fully aware of the necessity and importance of our decision, we are ready to bear responsibility for its consequences, we will make every effort to bring the respect and attention of fans in Russia and abroad back to the League Championship, to attract spectators to the stands and children to the sport schools. We hope that our intentions will be supported throughout the basketball community in the country.

- Professional Basketball Club CSKA (Moscow),
- Basketball Club Khimki (Moscow Region, Khimki),
- Basketball Club UNICS (Kazan),
- Men's Basketball Club Dynamo (Moscow),
- Basketball Club Lokomotiv-Kuban (Krasnodar),
- Men's Basketball Club Spartak (St. Petersburg),
- Basketball Club Triumph (Moscow Region, Lyubertsy),
- Basketball Club Red Wings (Samara),
- SKGAU Basketball Club Yenisey (Krasnoyarsk),
- Basketball Club Nizhny Novgorod (Nizhny Novgorod).

Should be interesting.
Respect and thanks for everything: Alvertis, Bodiroga, Jasikevicius, Radja, Wilkins, Vrankovic, Fotsis, Rebraca, Kattash, Gentile, Koch, Middleton, Kutluay, Rogers, Papadopoulos, Becirovic, Tomasevic, Siskauskas, Pekovic, Lakovic, Vujanic, Chatzivrettas, Maljkovic, Spanoulis and many more to follow in the near future.

I recently have heard that there's won't be Russian Basketball League and all teams may play in VTB + teams from Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraina and other ex-soviet countries. Russians want soviets to come back. Damn, morons...

10 Russian clubs already decided to create a new Russian League.

As for the rest, it's just basketball, relax.

Then how about Euroleague? Will Russian teams play in Euroleague if they need licence?

License from who? The only one handing out licenses for Euroleague is Euroleague itself and CSKA has a guaranteed A-type contract. They could give Khimki a B-type license next season.

What was the exact 'turmoil' all about?

Anyone have any ideas?

Refs corruption. They have a tape where refs are talking about given orders by basketball federation president to favour a certain team (Lokomotiv Krasnodar, who is by the way a member of the new league :o )

Of course we had posted about this team being pushed months before the tape circulated... even mentioning one of the three refs who are in the actual tape.

Dynamo Moscow: the ref was bribed!

If this league is transparent then it is a positive move. Anyway, breaking away from a corrupt Russian Basketball Federation is already a good sign.

Ginas Rutkauskas (Dynamo) was appointed president of the league and Andrey Vatutin (CSKA Moscow) vice-president.

the new league will tip-off at October 9. Two more spots could be created for any clubs interested to join in.

More precisely: Ginas Rutkauskas was appointed director general. Andrey Vatutin became the head of the league council.

Two clubs that will possibly join the league are Lokomotiv Novosibirsk and Surgut.

The new league will join ULEB (while the old Superleague A was not a part of ULEB and was directed by the Russian Basketball Federation).
