LKF Cup Final: Zalgiris vs. Rytas PDF Print E-mail
2008-02-06 14:24
ImageIt will be the second LKF (Lithuanian Basketball Federation) Cup Final after the competition has been revived last year. As it was expected before the season, two Lithuanian powerhouses will meet in the final tonight. The clash of these clubs is always a big event and the fact that both teams have qualified for the Euroleague Top 16 promises top class basketball.

In 2007 Žalgiris took the cup by defeating Lietuvos Rytas 84:65. This year both teams have high ambitions and the final is unpredictable. Lietuvos Rytas and Žalgiris met twice this year and both won a game each. Žalgiris won the first meeting in Kaunas in BBL (80:72). Sold-out Siemens Arena saw Lietuvos Rytas taking revenge 74:64 in LKL. The atmosphere that surrounds the meeting of these teams is always special.

Žalgiris had an easier semi-final against Neptūnas as they won the game 84:60. Marcus Brown was rested because of the foreign players limit. Mantas Kalnietis was the top scorer with 20 points for Žalgiris. Lietuvos Rytas had a more serious challenge as they faced LKF Cup Final Four hosts Šiauliai. The hosts did their best to fight Euroleague Group B winners but couldn't resist in the end and lost 66:71. The fans of Šiauliai should not be too disappointed as their favourite club will take on Neptūnas today in a 3rd place game.

Both 3rd place game and the final will be broadcasted on the internet live. 3rd place game starts 16:40 GMT today, it will be available here. The final will start 19:40 GMT and will be available here.
