The National Basketball Association and the National Basketball Players Association have announced today that they will be donating $1million to the Red Cross and to other charitable organisations in aid of Hurricane Sandy.

These organisations also include The Salvation Army and New York Cares as the teams and players are reaching out to everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy, which has destroyed New York, New Jersey as well as causing chaos in Virginia and parts of Canada.

Last night's highly anticipated game between the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks, the first regular season game to be played at the $1billion Barclays Center in downtown Brooklyn had to be postponed due to the hurricane.

In addition, all NBA teams and their players will be supporting a number of humanitarian organisations to help bring much-needed aid to those impacted by the devastation caused by the storm.

The league and its broadcast partners will also plan to air pre-game and in-game messages to encourage fans to support relief efforts by the Red Cross.
